 Meet the Suzuki Equator:
Based on the Nissan Frontier which is one of the best midsize trucks available in the United States, the Suzuki Equator is rugged, solid and reliable. It shares the same cab configurations, bed dimensions and powertrains with the Frontier, but its unique styling is what sets the Equator apart from it.
It’s available in a Crew Cab and an Extended Cab configuration and a short or long bed with either a Manual or an Automatic Transmission. You can also choose between Rear Wheel Drive and Four-Wheel Drive variations and a few different sets of option packages.
Built in support of the Suzuki Lifestyle
The Suzuki Equator is targeted for the adventurous outdoor enthusiasts who already love and support the Suzuki brand and the active lifestyle it stands for. Suzuki is best known for its motorcycles, ATVs and boat motors in the United States and they built the Suzuki Equator for the exact same market. Haul your Suzuki ATV or motorcycle with its tie-down cleats or tow your midsize Suzuki boat or “toy hauler” RV trailers with its 6,500-lbs towing capacity.
"There is a powerful connection between our motorcycle audience and the truck market," said Gene Brow, Suzuki’s VP for Marketing and Public Relations during the introduction of the Equator at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. "We have tens of thousands of Suzuki customers hauling our products in trucks every day. In fact, research shows that on average, our motorcycle and marine owners are nearly 50 percent more likely to have a pickup in their household fleet, and our ATV owners are nearly twice as likely to have a pickup in their garage. We are adding an entree to the menu of vehicles that they can get from Suzuki to support their lifestyles."
Reliable Powertrain and Features Maximize Functionality
The Suzuki Equator is powered by a 4.0-liter DOHC V-6 engine that can make up to 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque, better than most vehicles in this pickup class. This powertrain is supported by great features such as Continuously Variable Valve Timing and a variable intake system to maximize its output while complying with current emission standards. Its base engine is the 2.5-liter DOHC 4-Cylinder that can make up to 152 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. These engines are paired with either a 5-speed manual (4-cylinder) or a 5-speed electronically-controlled automatic with or without a shift-on-the-fly 4WD with an electronically-controlled part-time 2-speed transfer case.
For the serious off-roaders, 4-wheel active limited-slip traction control, an electronic locking rear differential, Vehicle Dynamic Control and Hill Hold Control are available. The RMZ-4 trim also offers Bilstein performance shocks, Dana axles and BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A tires.
Unique Styling Elements
Suzuki incorporated an entire set of styling elements that you won’t find in the Nissan Frontier. The Suzuki Equator has a different hood, grille, front fenders, bumpers, front fascia and tailgate. You can get a high utility bed that doesn’t just have a spray-on bed liner, but also a track-type tie down system with 4 cleats. Suzuki also offers a wide range of accessories including some great-looking bed extenders that will allow you to secure and transport your Suzuki motorcycle or ATV.
Comfortable, Full-Featured Interior
Suzuki tries to balance out the Equator’s rugged exterior with a roomy interior filled with convenience features such as a lockable dual glove box, a center console with a 12-volt power outlet and additional power points and cup holders and storage in the front doors. The Suzuki Equator also has a fold-flat front passenger seat and flip-up rear seats with removable storage boxes underneath for maximum flexibility. Other features integrated in its Premium, Sport and the top-of-the-line RMZ-4 trims include power mirrors, locks and windows, cruise control, remote keyless entry, XM Satellite Radio, wireless Bluetooth, a 6-CD changer, a factory moonroof and a Rockford-Fosgate audio system with 8 speakers, a subwoofer and steering wheel controls.
Industry-Leading Standard Safety and Security Features
The NHTSA gave the Equator Crew Cab 4 stars in both driver and passenger protection and the Extended Cab 4 starts for driver protection and 5 stars, the highest possible rating for passenger protection in frontal crash tests. On the other hand, the 2WD Equators received 3 stars for rollover protection and their 4WD counterparts earned 4 stars. The Suzuki Equator’s safety and security features include advanced driver and front passenger airbags, front seat-mounted airbags and roof-mounted side-curtain airbags, as well as a rollover sensor, side-door guard beams, three-point seat belts and an energy-absorbing steering column. Active front-seat head restraints that protect against whiplash injuries also come standard with the Suzuki Equator. Other trims also have remote keyless entry and immobilizer for better security.
